I must admit I have a little Spelling Bee scar. See back in the day I was a spelling star and as you can see writing is my love. When I was in the fourth grade I beat out every opponent during a school Spelling Bee and all I had to do was spell the very last word and I would win. The word was J-E-W-E-L-R-Y. Jewelry. Simple enough right? But aha! Growing up in the hood we pronounced everything WRONG! So I spelled the word the way we pronounced it, J-e-w-e-l-ER-y! Yea, the ER got me! So I didn’t win and was devastated because I thought since I was the last one standing, by default I should have won. Oh well, I still went on to be a word connoisseur and ultimately a journalist and harnessed my love for the craft.
Now here I am full circle taking my kids to Macy’s 7th annual Spelling Bee tomorrow Saturday August 25th at Lenox Mall, not to participate this year, but hopefully to harness a love for spelling so maybe they can perhaps be the spelling champion and capture the crown that mommy couldn’t. Hey there’s nothing wrong with living vicariously through your kids!
So tomorrow bring out your kids and have them spell to their little heart’s content!
Each of the 27 regional Spelling Bee winners will take home some great prizes, including an iPad, a $100 Macy’s Gift Card, a tutoring scholarship from Kaplan and an online gift card from Scholastic.
