Society doesn’t teach Black boys to appreciate Black girls and Sherri Shepherd has learned the hard way that her son isn’t immune to that messaging.
In a recent sit down with The Breakfast Club, Shepherd admitted her 13-year-old son Jeffrey doesn’t like Black girls because they are “mean.”
According to the former The View host, her son goes to a predominately white school and his interactions with the few Black girls who go there apparently have not been great.
“I am going through this thing, he likes these girls,” she said. “Because he came in and he said, ‘Mommy, I like white girls.”
She adds: “The little Black girls get mean with him.”

The Black girls in his class allegedly “don’t wanna speak” and “sometimes they act crazy,” which has been confusing to Jeffrey, said Shepherd. Her son was particularly taken aback by one Black girl who “moved her neck” when she talked to him.
“And he’s like, ‘Why they act so crazy?’” Shepherd continues. “And I’m like, ‘I don’t know. So, I keep trying to tell the little girls to be nicer so he can come towards you. But the other girls see him and they go, ‘Hey, Jeffrey’ and they wanna feel his hair…”
When she asked the radio show hosts, Angela Yee, Charlamagne The God and DJ Envy, for advice on how to handle the troubling situation, Yee suggested she bring her son around more Black children so he can get accustomed to socializing with them. Charlamagne Tha God recommended she bring Jeffrey around more strong male figures.
Interestingly enough, actress Gabrielle Union recently made headlines for a similar conversation on colorism with her two stepsons after noticing the boys were only attracted to light-skinned girls on Instagram. She shared the details of her schooling them on the beauty of the full spectrum of Black women on Refinery29.
