Every son will face becoming a man and most times there’s a pivotal moment that triggers that transition from boy to manhood. And in the new How to Train Your Dragon 2 movie, Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) made his manhood known when he defied his father to show the Vikings that dragons were not evil creatures.
The sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s successful How to Train Your Dragon (2010) continues to explore the emotions of the coming-of-age tale of a boy and his dragon and it opens today. The movie doesn’t disappoint and in vibrant 3-D, it adds another fantastical dimension to the dynamic coming of age tale.
I got to see it last week with my kids and we laughed and my girls even cried because it’s a moving story not only about a boy and his dragon, but the delicate relationship between parents and kids.
Hiccup, returns to the take with his trustworthy dragon, Toothless, the lovable Night Fury. That trust later is broken in the story in a sad twist of fate that I didn’t see coming.
Hiccup once again avoids his father, Stoick (Gerard Butler), who wants to groom him to eventually succeed as chief. Hiccup wilds out like most kids and goes on an adventure to new lands and discovers new dragons and a dragon catcher who wants to take him down and get all the dragons back. Astrid (America Ferrera) joins him on his adventures and they becomes his voice of reason and roady, of sorts.
After trying out one of his latest inventions that allows him to fly without Toothless, Hiccup discovers an ice island and a mysterious dragon rider, aka Valka (Cate Blanchett). The island is a sanctuary for dragons who are being hunted down by new villain Drago (Djimon Hounsou).
The story does take a sad turn but with Hiccup taking leadership, you will be rejuvenated and lifted up in the power of friendship and love between a boy and his dragon and a mother and son. Make this a go-see movie this opening weekend.

My daughter can’t wait to see this movie. Toothless is her favorite character in the movie. Right now she is missing her 2 front teeth and we’ve been calling her toothless.
My son really wants to see this movie. He saw the first and loved it. This prize pack would be for him.
I just read an article in Entertainment Weekly about how the animators made the decisions as to how to make Hiccup older without losing his ‘boyishness’ from the first movie. It was interesting.
We anxiously awaited the release and were not disappointed. The kids want to see it again already.
This movie looks insanely awesome. The graphics, the cast, the possible 3d( that gift card could help) I was a big fan of the first one and really would love to take my mother to see it. She likes movies like this.
