Forget about keeping up with the Joneses and who cares about the Kardashians. The new head family in town is the Johnsons and every Wednesday night at 9:30EST, you can keep up with the what’s-going-on’s of Dre, Rainbow and their kids on the new hit ABC show black-ish. And I took it even farther by visiting the set of the show to get an up-close and personal perspective and to follow and keep up with them as closely as I could. And I was all-up IN the Johnson house during the #ABCTVEvent in Los Angeles Nov. 2-5th.
I was in Rainbow’s kitchen with Marshall from Disney, preparing to serve an entrée. Who said bloggers can’t cook?
And if you’ve been watching black-ish then you already know how fly their house is on the show. I even did the cupcake dance that Dre did when he found out he was becoming famous at his kids school for buying cupcakes that they loved. Who remembers the chant: “When I say cup, you say cake! Cup-CAKE! Cup-CAKE!” And how Dre and the kids did the Nae-Nae dance out the door!

And I was all up in Dre and Rainbow’s closet checking out the clothes and kicks… My husband will have to get his sneaker game up.
The twins room is so pretty. The twins are played by Miles Brown as Jack Johnson and Marsi Martin as Diane Johnson. They are so cute.
And I toured Dre and Rainbow’s bedrooms and the family room, living room and dining room. The house has a feel like Martha Stewart had a heavy hand in the décor. It was warm and inviting.
And the next day, wouldn’t you know it, we saw the black-ish show kids on the red carpet at the Big Hero 6 premiere!
I was so truly excited about going to Los Angeles to visit the set of black-ish, my new favorite show Wednesday nights at 9:30 pm EST on ABC. I became a fan after the first episode when I was able to see for myself how a black family plays out what it means to live in a world where we as blacks constantly fight and claw our way to the top, while balancing our blackness without LOSING our identify and self-worth along the way.
It was a delight to talk to the kids in the cast behind Blackish: Marcus Scribner as Andre Johnson Jr, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Miles Brown as Jack Johnson and Marsi Martin as Diane Johnson.
Tonight’s episode of “black-ish” is titled “Oedipal Triangle” and features the feisty guest star Jenifer Lewis — Dre’s mother, Ruby, comes for a visit, and she smothers her pork chops with gravy, Dre with love, and would like to flat out smother Bow, who feels the same way about her. Dre tries to find a way to get the two most important women in his life to get along. (OMG I love the fro the grandmom put on Diane.)
