I was invited out to a high-energy show that made me want to sashay all up and down the Fox Theatre in Atlanta! Kinky Boots was a fun, eclectic and electric production that was inspired by true events. KINKY BOOTS tells the story of Charlie Price, who inherits his father’s shoe factory. Looking to save the family business, Charlie turns to a fabulously fashionable new friend — cabaret star Lola— who gives him an outrageous idea that could change both of their destinies.
And what Lola wants, Lola gets! Soon, this unlikely duo creates the most sensational footwear that’s ever rocked the runways of Milan, giving the factory and its hardworking family a sparkling new future.
J. Harrison Ghee (pictured below is Billy Porter the Broadway Lola) is DYNAMIC as Lola and really is as exuberant and feisty as it gets. Lola’s got some quick comebacks that will keep you cracking up and her personality is bigger than life. As a Drag Queen, she is everything — performing in red-hot stilettos and giving life to every nuance of the music and she moves and grooves and makes you want to get up and shake your shimmy. I truly enjoyed the character Lola. J. Harrison brought that stage to LIFE.
Another treat truly was watching Tiffany Engen as the character Lauren. Let me say this: I really don’t know whot to articulate how much enjoyment my soul conjured up watching Tiffany’s performance. I’m not sure how to put it into words! There is one part where she starts to reveal her love, er, um I mean LUST for the shoemaker Charlie and boy of boy she sings and does a very, very funny song and dance as her lust and longing for him emanated all across the room! It is simply HILARIOUS. And I do mean Hilarious. Like Lauren is off her rocker and needs to be reeled in! I LOVED every bit of it!
But what I deeply loved was the message about love and acceptance and learning to let people be who they are. It makes you think. Just change your mindset and you can change the world. Why are so many people bent on making other people be like them? What does it benefit YOU to try to make someone else be like YOU? There is no benefit. You don’t have to love everyone but you do have to let them be. The world would be a better place if we all learned to do just that. That message was at the heart f Kinky Boots. Basically, stop judging folks. This is an exuberant story about finding friendship, inspiration and passion where you least expect…
Check out a clip from the show and see it in Atlanta through APRIL 3rd!
