My daughter Kaitlin is involved in an amazing organization called Girls Going Global and this past weekend they visited Google Atlanta and took a tour of the facilities and learned so much more about the products and services they offer.
And when I tell you that it was an amazing experience, that is truly an understatement. Google is a tech giant that really hard to sum up, but we’re sure you are familiar with using the search engine to find just about anything you need and are curious about. Google is described as a multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products, which include online advertising technologies, search engine, cloud computing, software, and hardware. But it’s so much more than that. The young ladies got to collaborate and internet with Google execs and work in collaborative groups to figure out how to better use the tools that are at our disposal with Google.
While just about every teen girl who attended knew very well how to use most of Google’s products and already had gmail accounts, it was eye-opening to see some other lesser known things get demonstrated and see other products in action.
For instance, did you know:
- you can create a website through Google? (I didn’t)
- There is an explore tool on Google docs that allows you to find images and to cite websites in correct MLA format for your research papers? Whaaaat?! It takes so much work out of citing!
- There was so much more, it was kind of a whirlwind.
The Atlanta office was pretty cool and it looked more like a college residence hall than a workplace. There were games like an Xbox and Play Station 4 and an old school Ms. Pac-Man arcade game so employees to play. Yes mid-day if they need to take a brain break. Like, wow. And there was food GALORE. Google has a thing where having food just about every 50 feet is law. All the food is free. There’s also a restaurant inside and employees don;t ever have to leave to g grab a bite. Like who has time to be leaving and driving through traffic just for a meal. Smart, smart smart to have food at the employees disposal.
Then there was a area where you can literally sit in a massage chair and work. Dude. Just wow. Or you can walk on a treadmill and there was a place for your laptop to sit and you could exercise while working. I wouldn’t recommend getting funky in the middle of the day and smelling around your coworkers, but do you Google! And did I mention there are actual sleep pods. You can sleep on the job and not get fired. Whaaat?!! But what about the one guy who snores loudly? That would be a little bit of an issue don’t you think?
Google has created an ideal workplace, which should really be he standard since most employers want folks to damn near kill themselves doing work with little pay, barely time off to care for family and go above and beyond only to get little recognition or appreciation. Google’s got it right.
One of the things the young ladies did was to create a fake “deck” of sorts which is to pitch why Girls Going Global should receive a million dollars from Google. Again, this wasn’t a real pitch. Anyhoo, the girls went in groups and they made the BEST presentations that truly made Martice (founder of Girls Going Global) proud.
All of the darlings did amazing. They were thoughtful, confident and intelligent. I was especially proud of my daughter Kaitlin and her presentation too.
